Dispatches from the someone in his Wright mind:
18 September 2006 - Short Films That Should Be On DVD Already:
The Appointments of Dennis Jennings (dir. Dean Parisot, 1988) - This Academy Award-winning short is the story of a man who is betrayed by his psychiatrist -- played by Rowan Atkinson -- and his girlfriend -- played by Laurie Metcalf -- and sets out to take his revenge. The fact that the title character is played by Steven Wright, who also co-wrote the script, should give you some indication that this it's far from standard-issue.
In 1992, Dennis Jennings was screened as part of a program called Two Mikes Don't Make a Wright along with Michael Moore's Pets or Meat: The Return to Flint and Mike Leigh's A Sense of History -- both of which could also stand to be available on DVD. (The fact that Pets or Meat wasn't included on the Roger & Me disc still boggles me.) Probably too much to expect Two Mikes to be put out as it was presented 14 years ago. That would be too much like Wright.
20 September 2006 - Yesterday was Talk Like a Pirate Day. Did you remember? Yeah, me, neither.
21 September 2006 - R.I.P. Sven Nykvist, Swedish cinemtaographer extraordinaire, who died yesterday at the age of 83. He's most closely associated with Ingmar Bergman (no surprise there), but he's also worked with Woody Allen, Roman Polanski and Andrei Tarkovsky, among others. One of his last films, in fact, was Celebrity, which was Allen's best-looking film in years.
22 September 2006 - So... The world needed Jackass: Number Two? Seriously?
