The Beginning    The Immediate Past    The Past    The Immediate Future    The Present

Dispatches from the Spanglish Beat:

26 January 2004 - Quote of the Week: "You can try the best you can / If you try the best you can / The best you can is good enough." --Radiohead, "Optimistic," Kid A

27 January 2004 - It is my sad duty to report that the long-defunct Pork Pony is now no more. That means the stories that I wrote for Pork Pony are also no more (and the links to them in the archives of this site are -- you guessed it -- no more). Chris Leavens is working on getting a new site up and running, though, and he promises to include any new stories that I write, as well as reinstate all of the stuff that used to be on the old site. I'll let you know what's shaking as soon as it starts to shake loose.

28 January 2004 - Well, the Academy Award nominations were announced yesterday morning and I'm glad to say that Bill Murray nabbed one for Best Actor for his role in Lost in Translation (which was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay), Michael McKean and Annette O'Toole were nominated for Best Original Song for "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" from A Mighty Wind (they gotta get Mitch & Mickey back together one last time for the telecast!), Danny Elfman received a nod for Best Original Score for Big Fish, and Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini were nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for American Splendor. Those aren't the only people I'm rooting for, of course, but most of the others were recognized for their work on Finding Nemo, Master and Commander and The Return of the King and frankly, they don't need any of my help in their categories.

29 January 2004 - You know, the beginning of Cold Mountain is loud. Very loud. I haven't seen the film myself, but I am certain of the loudness because I saw Robert Altman's The Company last night and Cold Mountain was in the theater next door -- and it was loud. Very loud.

30 January 2004 - "Damn the illusion of movement! Damn the illusion of movement to hell!" --line from Welcome to the Show, Don Hertzfeldt's giddily funny introduction to The Animation Show
If you live in the Philadelphia area, you owe it to yourself to try to get out to see The Animation Show. It's playing at the Prince Music Theater though Wednesday. Go. Now. Dada will be here when you get back. (And if you don't live in the Philadelphia area, you can always check the schedule and pray that it hasn't already been through your town.)
