Dispatches from the Hawaiian Tropic of Capra-corn:
5 January 2004 - Quote of the Week: "Most importantly, have fun, man." --Alex, to his accomplice just before they leave for their last day of school in Gus Van Sant's Elephant, one of the best films of 2003 (in my considered opinion)
7 January 2004 - A friend of mine, in his LiveJournal, recently pointed out that we are at Orwell + 20. This, of course, only serves to remind me that we are also at Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral + 10. And David Bowie's Diamond Dogs + 30. Now, how this all ties together is the fact that Diamond Dogs started out as Bowie's attempt to turn 1984 into a concept record/stage extravaganza, but the Orwell estate wouldn't give him permission to do it. And, a couple decades later, he toured with Nine Inch Nails at the tail end of their Downward Spiral tour. (Admittedly, not the strongest of links -- especially since that tour was in 1995 and Bowie didn't play anything from Diamond Dogs on it -- but it's what I've got, so I'm sticking with it.)
9 January 2004 - By the way, you'll never guess who turned 57 yesterday. No, not George Orwell. The other guy.
