Dispatches from the Shadow of the Thin White Duke:
13 October 2003 - Quote of the Week: "Did Chris Columbus stay home? Nooooo. What if the Wright Brothers thought that only birds should fly? And did Galupa think that the Ulus were too ugly to save?" --Centauri, recruiter of The Last Starfighter
15 October 2003 - Saw Intolerable Cruelty the other day. As I had hoped, the ho-hum trailer I saw a few weeks back was merely the result of the studio trying to de-emphasize the Coen-ness of the film. (And trust me, there's plenty of Coen-ness to go around.) If you've had any doubts, dispel them with all due speed. This I command.
17 October 2003 - I also happened to see the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre the other day (the same day as Intolerable Cruelty, in fact). It was at a free preview and it was quite the about face, let me tell you.
I've been thinking about it all week, trying to decide whether I could recommend it or not, and I believe I have landed on the side of not. It's quite gruesome (which is to be expected) and unpleasant (well, a massacre -- with or without a chainsaw -- would hardly be genteel), but I think it verges on the sadistic at times and, in the latter half especially, becomes increasingly difficult to watch. I don't believe I've ever reacted so negatively to a film in all my life (and I'm a fan of the original). Consider yourselves warned.
